Nick Akers

I am a career public interest lawyer who has spent the last decade protecting the public by representing the state in the investigation and prosecution of businesses that have violated consumer protection, housing, and privacy laws.

My work has included enforcing the state’s tenant protection laws, taking on for profit colleges for defrauding their students, and suing banks for illegal debt collection and mortgage servicing violations.  I have also pursued big tech companies for privacy violations, sued big pharma over their role in the opioids crisis, and helped hold automakers accountable for lying to regulators and harming the environment.  I have helped pass legislation to protect consumers, college students, and veterans, and I was part of the team that sued the prior Trump administration to help protect California’s values.

Outside of my day job, I have provided legal assistance to deployed service members and military families, and I continue to volunteer with a bay area nonprofit as a pro bono asylum attorney.  Before law school I worked as a research analyst for the Hotel and Restaurant Workers Union, and I am a proud member of my union, the Association of California State Supervisors.

I have also served our community as a Burlingame Traffic Commissioner, as a poll worker, and as an elected member of the San Mateo County Democratic Central Committee, where I served for a decade and a half, including as a delegate to both the California Democratic Party and the CADEM Executive Board.

I hold a JD from Harvard Law School, an MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health, and a BA in Political Science and Labor and Workplace Studies from UCLA.  I live in Burlingame with my wife, who is a physician, and we are the proud parents of a daughter who is studying at Smith College.

I look forward to the opportunity to continue serving our community as a delegate to the California Democratic Party and would be honored to have your support.
